Next Monday, 2 August 2010, will see the resumption of the controversial ‘sodomy' trial of Malaysia's charismatic opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
Before the trial has even started, observers and leaders around the world already concur that the charge against Anwar, who is also the leader for Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), is baseless and politically motivated but the authorities seem determined to proceed with it.
This court trial that he is about to enter on Monday looks set to be a replay of the shameful trials he went through in 1998-1999, which were condemned worldwide and resulted in a lengthy prison sentence.
In addition to that, Anwar's counsels have a hard time and difficulty to mount an effective defence due to a number of unfair rulings made by the courts since the trial had started.
However, in the time where the trial was still ongoing, renowned blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin revealed another secret to the public and that secret was about a member from the prosecution team was having an affair with Saiful.
Saiful is not only Anwar's accuser but he is also the main prosecution witness in this controversial ‘sodomy' trial and because of the emergence of this scandal, that particular member was swiftly removed from the Federal Counsel line-up.
This new trial should be viewed as part of a wider, strenuous attack against Anwar Ibrahim and other Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders who are close to Anwar through the frequent attempts of the mainstream media which almost exclusively owned or controlled by the ruling regime, the Barisan National (BN), by portraying Anwar with a negative image as well as determined efforts to bring about the collapse of the PR-controlled state government, Selangor.
This is because Selangor is viewed as the richest state in the country and the flagship of PKR. An excellent example of this would be the constant harassment by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against the PR leaders in Selangor.
Furthermore, the renewal of the publishing permits for the official mouthpiece of all three PR component parties were either denied or delayed and it is not until recently that the permit for the PAS newspaper, Harakah, was renewed but it was also attached with stifling conditions in its renewal.
This divisive ‘sodomy' trial is scheduled to continue until the end of August.
