LingLiongSik300710aAs a result of a joint investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police, former Transport Minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik was put on trial yesterday at the Sessions Court in Putrajaya for the offence of cheating the Government over the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.

His prosecution in court yesterday was a shocker to the nation as he was believed to be the first Tun in the country to be prosecuted in a court of law and the fifth person to be charged over the PKFZ saga.

After posting his bail of RM 1 million, Dr Ling who was the longest-serving MCA president, said that he had faith in the country's judicial system.

In interim, current MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, on a visit to SJK(C) Poi Lam in Ipoh, revealed that although most of the party leaders were shocked by the prosecution of Dr Ling, he was confident that the former MCA president would get a fair trial.

At the same time, Public Accounts Committee chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said that he never thought Dr Ling was the ‘culprit' behind the PKFZ scandal.

On the other hand, another former MCA president and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said he only wanted the interest of the general public especially the taxpayers to be protected and he was not interested in specific personalities.

Ong then added that there was a necessity for the authorities to keep the public informed of its findings and if there was fraud, then the funds must be recovered.
